2016 NHL Playoffs Predictions: Caps Ducks Stanley Cup

2016 NHL Playoffs Predictions: Caps Ducks Stanley Cup

2016 NHL Playoffs Predictions: Anaheim Ducks vs Washington Capitals Stanley Cup

The Anaheim Ducks had one of the worst starts I can remember for an elite team. We lost some money early in the year, as I had them picked to dominate the West. That said, we got off them quick, they sorted things out, and they somehow won the division. With that kind of momentum, I like the Anaheim Ducks to win the Stanley Cup this year. I just don’t trust an Alexander Ovechkin Washington Capitals team. Here are the rest of our 2016 NHL Playoffs Predictions:
First Round Western Conference
Dallas Stars Vs Minnesota Wild: The Wild are one of the streakiest teams in hockey. They make me nervous. They can win a series and be dominant, or they can lose a series and look silly. For me, I’m going with consistency here. The Dallas Stars are the better team and they have shown it nearly all season. I think they will take out an inconsistent Wild team that lacks the depth and consistency necessary for a deep playoff run.

St. Louis Blues vs Chicago Blackhawks: The lone blemish last year is that I questioned the Chicago Blackhawks. I like the Blues, I like their defense, I like their goalie, I like their system. Chicago just knows how to win. I think it would be a mistake to write them off, and I’ll trust their experience and offensive firepower to guide them through this series.
Blackhawks in 7
Anaheim Ducks vs Nashville Predators: I love the Predators. As with the Blues, I like their defense and goaltending. This year, they’ve had some offense as well. Unfortunately, they draw the best team in hockey for this one. I think the Ducks will win this series comfortably.
Ducks in 5
LA Kings vs San Jose Sharks: I don’t trust Pete DeBoer and this Sharks team. They were wildly inconsistent. That said, this is a fun series where Martin Jones returns to his old team with one thing on his mind – vengeance. The LA Kings have been there before and I like their goaltending and defense. The question is, quite simply, can the Kings score. Against a sloppy Sharks team and with home ice advantage, I think the answer is yes.

First Round Eastern Conference
Washington Capitals vs Philadelphia Flyers: I hate the Flyers. As hard as it is to trust a Washington Capitals team that has failed to put it all together every single year under Alexander Ovechkin’s leadership, I think they dominate an inferior team here.
Caps in 4
Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Rangers: It sounds funny to say it, but I just don’t think it’s the New York Rangers’ year. They have some top-end offensive talent, the names on defense seem to be pretty elite, and they have a goalie that, while he hasn’t won anything, is capable of stealing games singlehandedly. The Penguins are just too hot right now.
Penguins in 5
Florida Panthers vs New York Islanders: Given the goalie situation in New York and the mediocre play down the stretch, I like the Florida Panthers. This is a fun organization with an infusion of young talent that finally got a goalie. I expect them to be competitive this year.
Panthers in 5
Tampa Bay Lightning vs Detroit Red Wings: The Red Wings played well down the stretch and made the playoffs for the 20 millionth time in a row. That said, the Tampa Bay Lightning have goaltending, offense, and have been the better team all year. I think they will light up the Red Wings here.
Lightning in 6
Second Round:
Dallas Stars vs Chicago Blackhawks: Again, I don’t really see anything particularly spectacular about the Blackhawks, but the Stars don’t blow me away either. The top line for Chicago might be too much for Dallas here, and experience could be decisive.
Blackhawks in 6
Anaheim Ducks vs LA Kings: The LA Kings do not have enough offense to win this series. I think both teams are strong defensively, but the Ducks have way more depth up front. I think they will skate circles around the Kings, and they should be able to knock out their division rivals here.
Ducks in 6
Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins: Remember when Sidney Crosby vs Alexander Ovechkin was supposed to be a modern day rivalry for the ages? Though it never really materialized beyond the concussions and nonsense, this series has the potential to give the rivalry new meaning. I think the Caps are the deeper, better team, but the Penguins have been playing incredible hockey. I’m basically banking on a goaltending and defense meltdown again in Pittsburgh.
Caps in 7
Florida Panthers vs Tampa Bay Lightning: I like the Lightning here. It’s hard to get over how sexy and explosive this team can be. The Panthers have some pieces and had a fantastic regular season. Here though, I think the Lightning are built for playoff success.
Lightning in 6
Conference Finals:
Anaheim Ducks vs Chicago Blackhawks: The Anaheim Ducks are the better team. I trust their goaltending, I like their offensive depth, and I think this is their year. The Chicago Blackhawks just have too many holes. By this point they might look like a snowball rolling down the side of a mountain, but I think the Ducks just have too much talent.
Ducks in 5
Washington Capitals vs Tampa Bay Lightning: Again, I like the Bolts and it’s hard to trust the Caps after so many years of playoff misery. Still, the Capitals are the better team. I think the Caps defense and goaltending can slow down the Lightning. I’m not sure the opposite is true.
Caps in 6
Stanley Cup Finals Prediction:
Anaheim Ducks vs Washington Capitals: I think the Ducks are the best team in hockey. I think they have the most depth across the board. While I think the Caps had a phenomenal year and these two teams stand out in a weak field this year, I think the Ducks are simply the better team. The Caps backed into the playoffs and I think it finally catches up with them here.
